I agree. We use preferred addresee and salutation all the time so we can communicate with the donor the way they prefer. We are able to format these optional formats, why would they not be configured like they are for letter templates. i.e. Addressee - if there is a "preferred addressee" use that otherwise use "primary addressee" etc.
The same works for orgs. We also set up organization addressee and salutation as they will be different when communicating with one of the spouses (who may be the owner of the org) vs communicating to both spouses, so we use org addressee and salutation. These are also configured as above on letter templates.
This is great news that it is planned! I hope we’ll be able to implement functionality similar to what we have in Raiser's Edge reporting and exports—specifically, conditional logic that allows the system to select a preferred salutation when one is present and automatically default to an alternate salutation when it is not.
I'm a little bit shocked that this hasn't been in place in the beginning. Blackbaud talks a lot about how important donor stewardship is, but then doesn't provide the tools for us to provide proper stewardship. This is pretty fundamental to communicating with someone via email.
I 100% agree. We have donors complaining that there formal name (used on donation receipts) is not the name they go by. eg Mildred vs Millie. Personalized email/mailed letters should be in the name they go by, which we have under Salutation. Also, we send out invites via email designer and we would like both spouses names to show up on the email. So Salutation works the best. Please set up "Salutation" as a merge field!
This is 100% the reason I have not and cannot migrate my mass emails from Online Express to RE NXT. I cannot send an email to my constituents using just the fields provided. The data would be incorrect. We rely on the primary and secondary salutation fields to produce accurate data that reflects our donors' wishes and the personal touch that we aim for in our communications. We have a lot of unique circumstances and I absolutely do not want my donors to receive something that is addressed incorrectly. Donors expect nothing less than perfection these days and I will not send something out knowing that the tone of address will be off. This needs to be fixed ASAP!
I agree with other comments - this is a significant oversight in the buildout of an email system. To not allow an organization to effectively communicate with their constituents is ridiculous and "crazy". I also see numerous different submissions of this idea - I hope the reviewers look at all of the related ones and see this as a high priority.
Adding my voice to this - someone else used the word 'crazy' below that this has not been done yet. I'd say it's crazier that it wasn't included in the first place... why provide an option for 'primary salutation' on the database and not expect people to need to use it in mass emails... Title 1 and Surname works for most people (Mr/Mrs/Dr/Prof/Judge/Lord/Lady, etc.), of course, but if addressing a Sir or Dame, it just looks plain ignorant and stupid to have 'Sir/Dame Smith'. I really don't want to have to implement a system where we have to separate out anyone with a title that needs Title 1 and First Name instead to send them separate emails. What a monumental waste of time and effort when Blackbaud have the solution right there on the database already...
If OLX could have it as a field, surely, SURELY, it is not beyond the capacity of NXT Marketing to make this happen... Quickly.... PLEASE!
I just logged into Online Express and got a message saying it had been a while since I'd last used it — though it’s only been a few weeks. I had to re-enable it, which was a bit surprising.
I primarily use NXT for bulk emails that don’t require personalization, since it lacks the nuanced formatting options available in the database view. However, for higher-stakes communications — emails that are sent in bulk but still need to feel personal — I absolutely depend on the ability to customize addressees and salutations.
In the database view, wherever there's an option to format an addressee or salutation, we can specify: "Use this if present on the individual; otherwise use this." That fallback formatting has been in place for over two decades, and my entire database structure for correspondence relies on it.
It would make a huge difference to have this kind of conditional logic supported in NXT, and it’s exactly what’s needed to allow me to move away from Online Express. This is true for all organization that needs both efficiency and personalization in communication. Until this is built into NXT please do not sunset OLX. We aren't going to pay extra for Constant Contact so that is not a silver lining. Please and thank you.
It is a bit crazy that this has not been added. Why send an email thru NXT when we don't use their salutation? It is a tip off to donors that it is a mass email and indicates that we don't even know them - absurd and counterproductive.
Finally!
Love it!

Thanks! This transition has created more work because of all the missing pieces. Keep it coming , and fast!

This is a CRITICAL need for my organization.

Why is this not yet an option? The salutation field should absolutely be an option in NXT email marketing.
Agreed! The option for a salutation field is absolutely necessary.
