A list was created and an email sent out. The "test" function has you add your own email, so the merge is unable to be checked. There is no way to test that the merge is working correctly until an recipient of your email replies back to you. It would be very helpful to send a test email from the first and second names on a list, so to confirm that the merge is actually performing correctly. i.e.: Dear {First name}
