Recurring Opportunities/Actions

I have many grant proposals that we submit annually, on the same date. It would really streamline workflow to be able to set up recurring actions and opportunities, so that I don't have to manually add them. Or, as an alternative, if I could import a spreadsheet of opportunities or actions, that would solve the same problem.

We have monthly meetings with a few of our foundation donors. Would be helpful to enter as a recurring action.

Kylee Long: US Bank has a grant window that opens every year on March 1st. I would like a recurring ACTION "Grant Window Opens" on March 1st every year.

Since you have few Comments here, I'll jump in. With all due respect to Lee and Jen, I'm not sure I entirely agree with their full Comments here. First, I don't hear many requests for recurring Opps. The idea isn't a bad one, I do hear of grant opps that occur every year, but I'm not sure most folks would worry too much about Recurring Opps if they had Recurring Actions. Recurring Actions aren't a daily need, but they do come up every now and for legitimate reasons. It makes a lot of sense in the context of Lee's comments for a grant writer or Corp/Found fundraiser to be able to say, "remind me every year to consider creating and pursuing a proposal for this foundation." There's an element in which RE should do that automatically as a former donor--what's the plan to get their gift again this year?--but they might not always be a donor to have an old gift to flag them as lapsed. If you create a recurring Action, it needs to leave an action history. For example, if I were to create a recurring action for the four quarterly reports I owe to my funder over the next year, as I do them it should leave an action behind that says I did each on each date. While I don't want to have to create four (or more) actions in advance, just one, I want four (or more) actions left in my wake as I do them. I'm not sure I agree with Lee or Jen that importing (which can be done) or Workflow is the same thing. It's been a long day, I wish I had top of mind the many examples of requests I've heard over the years for recurring actions, but opps and grants seem to me to be a good example.

Hi. Could you give me an example of what you would like to be able to do with this? I understand you want to set up recurring actions/opportunities, but do you want it to be based on the date of the grant proposal, or something else? Just trying to make sure I understand to see if this is something we have planned or not. :) Thanks!

I believe this is coming with Workflow Automation.

In the meantime, you can import Opportunities and/or Actions via RE7 to get them in.  You might also consider an Attribute/Custom Field to indicate which Constituent Records fall into this situation, so that you can easily populate the next year's worth of Opportunities & Actions at the start of each year.
