Applying a donation with fees covered to a pledge

We just recently started using the Standardized Donation Forms and elected fees to be covered by the donor. People are gladly paying the fees, but now we can't apply their payments to pledges because they exceed the pledge amount. Fees are an expense, not revenue, and we want to record them that way separate from the pledge payment. We have now elected to NOT collect fees because it's more trouble than it's worth from an accounting perspective. Too bad we have to miss out on donor cover fees because of Blackbaud.

That is the plan, yes. To have one gift be the pledge application with whatever its splits are and then a second gift for the donor cover set to its splits. Currently you would get 2 gifts with a bunch of splits that end up equaling the full amount but we can be cleaner about that for sure.

Thanks for the update Anthony! One additional note I would make: if the solution ends up being to break up the gift into two pieces, I would ask that each gift become its own unique gift record with its own Gift ID. Split gifts have proved to be unworkable for our organization's reporting.

Additionally, the ability to break up any gift that a donor submits into multiple gifts would be helpful. Currently our workaround in cases where someone submits a single gift, intending to pay off multiple pledges with different codings with it, is to Adjust the initial pledge-paying gift that came in via a donation form down to only pay off one gift amount, and then add the other gift in manually--not the best long-term solution!

We are planning this work for this year. It depends on "overfunding" pledges to be completed first since gifts with donor cover are usually over the amount of the gift. We are looking to handle this cleaner than db view does today in regard to the splits on the multiple gifts.

Agreed. Currently you can commit the batch in Web View and then manually go apply the pledge payment in Database View. However, with Database View being retired next year, this workaround (which Blackbaud's own Knowledgebase currently suggests as the solution!) no longer will work.

If there is some legal reason why Blackbaud is hesitant to let gifts where the donor pays fees be applied to pledges in this way, then give us the option in those cases to, in-the-moment, split the transaction into two gifts: one for the original gift amount, and one for the fees. That way we can at least pay off the initial pledge, and then count the fee coverage as a separate donation so all the donor's giving is accounted for.

NXT does not provide a means to apply a gift to a pledge when the donor covers the fee. This is an egregious oversight. I spent several hours trying to find a work-around, unsuccessfully. I will have to write-off the remainder of the pledge--even though it is paid--and provide detailed notes for our accountant and for our annual audit. I sometimes wonder why we're paying so much for a broken system.
