Allow batch to replace "new" constituent with existing constituent without creating new record for online gifts

Our donors frequently make online gifts with different names/addresses than what we have in their record (abbreviated names, spouse of constituent, etc) and each time it creates a new record that we then have to go in and manually delete. Once we've selected the correct donor in batch, why does it not remove the newly created record? They also aren't discovered in the "remove dupes" tool so we are constantly discovering empty duplicate records. The new "new" that is on the batch helps us know now when a new one is being created but we still have to manually go in and delete it. Thanks!
