I couldn't find anything similar so I'm creating a new idea. Because we are a K-12 school, we leave graduates linked to their parents' addresses until they reach 25 or 26. We figure that's when they will be more established and most likely not living at home, while there are some exceptions. However, I was unable to find a way to manually stop sharing an address in NXT, which is an option in DB view. This ability is crucial.
Every year, we perform a maintenance utilizing a query and export to review all alums who share an address with their parents. We manually go through each record and stop sharing those addresses, so alums who submit an address change or USPS change of address form from that point forward have their addresses updated without impacting those that shared an address with them.
The reason we established this procedure was because we found that we "lost" a lot of alums if we unlinked their shared addresses at the time of graduation. It's not uncommon for parents to move or downsize when their kids are of college age. If we unshared their records too soon, we found that their parents' change of address forms didn't always include them, so their addresses stayed the same as when they graduated - thus losing them and requiring additional research on our part to find them again.
Additionally, by keeping them linked to their parents during their college years, we could at least count on parents holding and passing along mail to their kids.
