I created a simple insight to show a gift officer's total actions for the current year compared to the same period in the previous year but that comparison does not work as it pulls in all of last year based on the dashboard filter.

Based on BB help, there is no easy automated fix for this insight at the year level. Please edit the SP Previous Year function so that it is a true SP comparison. The way it currently works is confusing to MGOs looking to benchmark work.
