"Smart" merge options in email marketing

At times, I'm blown away by how intuitive and "smart" RENXT can be, and other times, I'm baffled that it doesn't do something that seems simple (keyword being seems, I'm definitely no programmer! :)).

How, when merging "Preferred Name" into an email, does it not default to First Name if there is no preferred/nick name? When sending an email to board members, we have a couple James-that-go-by-Jims, and my options are to merge "preferred name", and leave blanks for our Marys and Johns and Cynthias, or I can use "First Name" and have it say "Dear James," or "Dear Timothy," These are people I know personally, and work with closely, and it's odd that I can't efficiently email them all together from a list. I guess two separate emails it is...

There are half a dozen or more related ideas to this pointing out that we NEED better options for merging names into NXT emails. I do hope Blackbaud merges all these ideas and sees that it adds up to quite a lot of votes for something that should be relatively easy to implement for a big impact to users!

I have this "smart preferred name" as well. What if there were a merge firld for the "Salutation" on the constituents record? Then on a case by case basis we could honor couples, Preferred names, whatever.

Or even give us a "merge individual addressee" option! We have that set up for all married folk in our database in case we need to send individual mailings. That would solve the problem without having to program a smart formula.
