I'm feeling the clunky nature of predictive text in webview table fields--as i type in more letters, I see fewer possible entries appearing in my menu: that works great. Once I select the one I want, I copy it. Then I scoot up or down my column and paste, and this is where it gets strange for me. Only one option pops up in my menu (thank goodness!) but I have to select it for it to populate. There is only one option, though, copied in full exactly, character for character.
What would it take to code that so the entry can populate without my selecting it from a menu, allowing me to move on?
The internet AI says: "To automatically populate the input field when only one matching option remains, you need to update your predictive text logic (typically inside your text input's input or keyup event listener). The logic change requires checking the length of your filtered results array. If the length equals 1, you instantly update the input value and close the dropdown. Key Considerations for Your UX
Preserve Backspacing: If you use this exact code, a user trying to backspace might get trapped because backspacing to a string that still matches only one item will instantly re-complete it. To prevent this, track the inputType in your event or listen for a keydown event. If the user hits Backspace or Delete, temporarily disable the auto-populate logic.
Selection State: Ensure that whatever function triggers when a user manually clicks an item in the menu (handleItemSelection in the example above) is also called during this auto-populate trigger so your backend/database query registers the selection.
HTML datalist alternative: If you aren't tied to custom JavaScript dropdown markup, using a native MDN HTML datalist element allows browsers to handle lookups natively, though it still typically requires the JavaScript logic above to force an instant auto-fill on a single match.
