If an Opportunity is on John Doe's record, and John's gift comes from the John Doe Foundation, we hard credit the foundation and soft credit John. Currently in NXT, I can't connect the gift from the Foundation to John's Opportunity, but I can in DBV. This request is similar to the Event record that allows gifts for fees or donations from a constituent other than the participant to be connected to the participant's record.
